Benchmark Methodology

Enterprise vs Startup Benchmarks

Mature cybersecurity enterprises and early-stage startups operate in different performance contexts. Direct comparisons across stages can be misleading without normalization. This page explains how and why we adjust for company maturity.

Stage-Adjusted Scoring

Our composite scores are calculated within stage cohorts: seed, early growth, growth, and mature. A seed-stage company is compared against seed-stage medians, not against CrowdStrike. This ensures that a 94/100 for a seed-stage company represents exceptional performance within its cohort — not parity with a $50B enterprise.

Growth rate expectations are highest for seed-stage companies (median ~100% YoY) and lowest for mature companies (median ~25%). Capital efficiency is inverted — mature companies with years of revenue accumulation naturally show higher ARR-to-funding ratios. Our weighting system accounts for these structural differences.

Innovation scores tend to be highest for early-stage companies building novel architectures and lowest for mature companies focused on incremental improvements and platform consolidation.

Why Stage Matters for Benchmarking

Comparing a seed-stage startup to CrowdStrike on retention rate is meaningless — CrowdStrike has 15+ years of customer base development. Similarly, comparing CrowdStrike to a seed-stage company on growth rate ignores base effects. Our benchmark exists to provide apples-to-apples performance data within meaningful peer groups.

For investors evaluating early-stage opportunities, our seed-stage and early-stage benchmarks provide the most relevant comparison sets. For enterprise buyers evaluating vendor performance, our full-population metrics and mature-stage profiles offer better context.
